Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) - Canada's largest trade and industry association - is pleased to introduce a new national initiative to help manufacturers reduce costs by integrating essential skills with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) strategies in the workplace. The Essential Skills through Safety and Health (ESSH) project is developing innovative ways to support small to medium-sized employers in delivering health and safety training for employees whose first language is not English or French, or those who have difficulties reading and writing.

- What about employees who are not proficient in English or have difficulties with reading and writing?
You're not alone. Many employees in Canada may not speak English as their first language or might have challenges reading and writing. With our new interactive learning resources, we have developed a curriculum that teaches workplace essential skills (like communicating and working with others) through OH&S instruction. - How will I know if this training method is working?
ESSH has structured training and homework to be carried out within the company so supervisors and managers can see and report the changes in safety behaviours and understanding. - How can I train my workers without shutting down production?
Essential Skills through Safety and Health (ESSH) understands that for small and mid-sized companies, it's difficult to take a large group off the production line to fill a class. We designed our program with reduced training hours, flexible sessions and complete adaptability. - How does this training relate to my workplace?
ESSH creates training materials by using documents and interactions from your operations. We believe individuals learn better when they understand something that they will see or use again.
